Phlox, cultivation and care

THEPhlox paniculatathey are very resistant to cold, so unlike hydrangeas, they do not need any protection even for those who grow in the north. In winter they do not need any care. The first attention will have to arrive in spring: it is in this period that it would be better to administer a first fertilization.

Starting from May, every 15 days, administer a ternary product with a high potassium content. Alternatively, you can administer a slow release fertilizer to be spread at the base of the individual plants from the month of April. Use granular fertilizers at minimal doses. If not indicated on the package, give one tablespoon of fertilizer for each plant.

During the summer, the plant needs a lot of water. A water deficit could prevent or minimize flowering. To stimulate flowering, always remove the withered inflorescences so that the plant can emit new shoots. Beware though! Avoid this practice in the first years of cultivation because when the phlox becomes stronger and matures, it can provide more abundant blooms.

Phlox, diseases

The hardy varieties are the most resistant, however, some varieties can be vulnerable to fungal diseases especially the white sickness. If you have already had problems with sore white in the garden, it is better to carry out preventive treatments on phlox with copper-based products.
